Boy or Girl? Old Wives Tales

Since we won’t find out if im carrying a boy or a girl for 7 more weeks, I thought it would be fun to consult a bunch of old wives tales. Once we find out for real, it could be interesting to see which ones were right for me and which weren’t and maybe this post will help other waiting moms to bide the time.

Old Wives Tale #27: Legs

If your legs get really big, you’re having a boy. If your legs stay in shape and lean, it’s a girl.

-Girl, but I’m only 12 weeks!

Old Wives Tale #28: Moodiness and a Little Pecker

If you are really moody, you are having a girl since you have another extra girl hormones in you. Your pregnancy will make you smile and be more happy if you are having a boy because there’s a little penis inside you.

-Girl, just ask my husband.

If you eat the ends of bread, it’s a boy. If you eat the middle of the load, it’s a girl.

-I always eat the middle, nothing has changed there, so girl.

Old Wives Tale #31: Moms Beauty

It is said that the girl “steals the mother’s beauty”. If you think that pregnancy has never made you look more beautiful, you might just be having a little boy.

-Girl? I’ve had two big zits, so nothing over the top and my skin is sooo dry.

Old Wives Tale #32: Dream of Sex of Baby

If you have dreams that you are having a boy, you will have a girl. If you dream about having a girl, it will be a boy. Dreams show the opposite of what you are having.!

-Girl, again!

Old Wives Tale #33: Clumsy vs. Graceful

If the pregnant woman is graceful throughout her pregnancy, shes having a girl. If she becomes clumsy, shes having a boy.

-Neither? Or girl, I guess because no extra clumsiness.

Old Wives Tale #35: Side You Most Rest On

If a pregnant woman prefers to lay on her left side, shes having a boy. If she prefers resting on her right side, shes having a girl.

-It really depends where im sleeping.

Old Wives Tale #36: Hands

When the pregnant woman is asked to show her hands, its a boy if she keeps her palms down and a girl if she shows her palms up.

Old Wives Tale #37: Dad’s Weight Gain

If the dac-to-be gains weight while you are pregnant, it’sa girl. If he doesn’t gain weight, you’re having a boy.

Old Wives Tale #38: Breast Test

If a pregnant womans left breast is larger than the right breast, shes having a girl. If the right breast is larger, its a boy.

-I’ll leave the answer to this one between my husband and I lol. Family reads this blog.

Old Wives Tale #40: What Do You Think?

71% of the time, the mom-to-be knows what she is having.

Old Wives Tale #41: Morning Sickness

If you had a smooth pregnancy with no morning sickness, its a boy. If you were sick or felt really nauseous during your pregnancy, count on a girl.

Old Wives Tale #42: Areolae

If your areolae (the part around your nips) have darkened, its a boy.

-another one for the husband and I to know. I’m leaving these for other mom’s even if I won’t answer.

Old Wives Tale #43: Protein

When a pregnant woman craves meat and cheese, count on a boy.

Old Wives Tale #44: Feet

Are your feet colder now that you are pregnant? If so, you just might be having a boy. If your feet have stayed the same before pregnancy and during, youre having a little girl.

Old Wives Tale #45: Hair on Legs

If the hair on your legs has been growing at record speeds, you might be having a boy.

Old Wives Tale #46: Hands are Dry

If your hands are constantly dry, its a boy.

Old Wives Tale #47: Urine

What color is your pee? If it is bright yellow, you will have a little boy. If your urine is a dull yellow, plan on a girl.

-Girl? I drink water and pee allll the time, so it’s hard to tell since its like water lol.

Old Wives Tale #49: Headaches

If you are having headaches, you might be carrying a boy

Old Wives Tale #51: Baby Names

It is said that when you can only think of specific names for a boy or a girl, you will have that particularly baby.

-I can be a little type A, so we have already chosen a full name for either. It did take us much longer to agree on the boy name.

Old Wives Tale #4: Heart Rate

If the babys heart rate is above 140 bpm, it is said that the baby will be a girl. If it is under 140 bpm, then it will be a boy.

-girl, but it’s only in the 150s which really makes me think boy since girls tend to be more like 160-170

Old Wives Tale #16: Mayan Tale

The Mayan tale adds the mothers age at conception and the year of conception. If the result is a even number then mom is having a girl. If the result is an odd number then a boy is on the way!

Final tally? It seems like most of the old wives tales compiled here point to a girl, except for my mother’s intuition which says boy. I know they’re just old wives tales, but I think it’s fun to know about them and see what they say. I’d love a little girl, too, I just don’t think that’s what im having.

12 Week Bump and Update

image image

I feel like this week my belly has started to make the transition from bloat/displaced organs to bump. It’s subtle but it looks to me less thick all over and more concentrated… Will this awkward stage where I look chunky be over soon? My uterus did finally rise above my pelvic bones this week, and it seemed to make a difference. It feels lately that that my belly is always sticking out, not just after I eat or at the end of the day, it’s like just kind of out there all the time, saying hi to everyone even though no one would guess baby so probably people who see me think i carb load and drink a lot of beer to have such a gut. Which is fine because in 197 or so days maybe I will even just do that. Okay not really right away and that sounds gross right now.

Speaking of food, there’s where I was at this week. Baby and I were both fed, but not over fed. Or, not overfed by my standards. I aim for an average of 1900-2000. That’s actually a lot of food since I don’t have empty calories from wine or soda in there. I have one Gatorade or orange juice mixed with Perrier a day if I want and the rest of the day I drink loads of water.

Total Weight Gain: 3 lbs (it fluctuated between 2-3 but the average was 3 so I’ll go by that)

This past week I’ve taken to have one cuppa something caffeinated in an attempt to drive out the daily headaches. Also tried Tylenol (duh) and magnesium supplements in conjunction. The headaches are usually much more bearable after some combination of these things.

I already posted a lot this week, so Im surprised I even had this much to say. But there’s more! I saw the baby yesterday on ultrasound and got loads of cute pictures and some creepy ones because the poor baby is twelve weeks, some angles are bound to be creepy. Heartbeat was between 148 and 152 and im officially stating that I think it’s a boy. And now because mom guilt kicks in early, I feel bad for spying on my baby in the womb and then calling it creepy 😦 ahhh hormones!

Blackberry Cobbler And Grocery Shopping

When I go grocery shopping, I like to try to buy according to what is on sale. And not 20 cents off sale, but a significant portion of the price… $1.00 off a $3.00 product or this week blackberries, 6 oz. for $1.25 instead of $3.00. This tactic has helped me to eat fresh healthy foods while pregnant without blowing the grocery budget. That salad I added to the other day’s post was composed from great produce deals and was satisfying and good for the baby and I.

I think when we move I’ll be smarter about it and find a circular online or at the store before shopping so that I can see what’s on sale and plan meals accordingly. The way I do it now, I can’t plan ahead other than just knowing I’ll eat blackberries or spinach in the next few days but I can’t meal plan ahead anyway thanks to this first trimester business. For now, in addition to my produce purchases, I buy sale cereal or soup or frozen food to hoard until I’m hungry and it sounds decent.

Tonight I decided to make blackberry cobbler since those lovely blackberries are too tart to eat on their own. I had all the ingredients except for sugar and shortening. Doesn’t that make my pantry sound so healthy?? It’s kind of a lie because sure, I don’t keep sugar around, but I do have cinnamon toast crunch, Chex mix and fruit roll ups in there.

Anyway, I have always been a baker, even as a kid I would bake sugar cookies on snow days since my mom didn’t keep junk in the house, but we always had the basics needed for a simple no-frill cookie. I’ve even got a signature cookie, but I’ve never tried a pie or cobbler or really anything beyond cookies and the occasional cake. Im definitely hoping to keep expanding my repertoire of cooking and baking this year, with reasonably healthy dishes, so it was a perfect time to try my hand at a cobbler, which is actually really simple!!

Moving and bumps and stuff

I am excited to say that we are moving in just under 8 weeks! Well, excited and anxious because oh my god, we JUST did this!! But this time we are hiring people to load a van and drive our stuff 800 miles and then unload our stuff, yay!! We don’t own that much, so it’s going to cost less than I expected, though it is not cheap by any means. And, oh yeah, we are in the process of buying a house. If all goes well with the inspection this week and subsequent appraisal we will be closing March 16th and moving March 21st.

Once we got that figured out, I made an appointment with an OB in Bangor, Maine (where we are moving) for my anatomy scan. We’re moving right after I hit 19 weeks, so my appointment is March 24 and I’ll be 19w4d. Since it’s right after the move I am optimistic that C. will actually be able to to be there!

In other news that isn’t really as news-worthy at all, I now have a bump in front view as well as side view! I am definitely not showing, haven’t popped, etc, but for people who know me and what I usually look like I am showing a little from the front and side now. And it snowed an inch or two here in hampton roads, which the cats were quite interested in. I let them check it out on the balcony and there are cute little paw prints in the snow now.

11 Week Bump and Update

image image image

total weight gain: 2.5

This past week I was hungry!! As you can see. And at 10w6d I found that while I could button my pants, they were quite uncomfortable. I still look pudgy not prego, but it’s obvious that this lime-sized baby and grapefruit-sized uterus are displacing some things because while most of me is the same, my belly is not cooperating with my clothes. And I managed to outgrow my size large sports bra already, though it’s been a tight fit since week 5 so I shouldn’t be too surprised.

Not much else pregnancy related this week. I’ve been frustrated at not being able to find the baby on the Doppler, or a little worried, but it’s hard for doctors to find at this point so I know it’s normal that I can’t find it. When I found it before the baby wasn’t moving yet, and this active fetus is much harder to pin down for me! I decided to put up the Doppler since I won’t risk overuse by trying for too long or every day and Im hoping having it out of sight will make it easier to wait for my next appointment at 12 weeks 5 days.

also this week, the ugly. Four straight days of headaches and only useless Tylenol at my disposal. I only bothered trying it once and of course it made no difference. And apparently I must always have a giant, awkwardly placed hormonal zit. This week it’s on my nose. The front of my nose. Last week’s hasn’t even fully faded so I have the nose zit and a red dot on my upper lip. So, yeah, glowing can replace this any time.

10 Week Bump and 9 Week Summary

I’ve actually lost 2-3 lbs since 8 weeks, but you wouldn’t know it looking at  my gut. I’m still not showing in the sense that I’m not obviously pregnant, but C. and I can definitely tell a difference. And now a summary of my 9th week:

Weight gain this pregnancy: 2 lbs above ppw (ppw= pre-pregnancy weight)

Cravings?: soup and cold cereal. Specifically, waffle crisp, corn pops and chicken noodle soup. I don’t know if I’d call it a craving so much as these are foods that I’ve found to be not only tolerable, but good, multiple days in a row.

Aversions?: I walked out of the bedroom this morning and immediately said “Oh my god, what is that SMELL?!” C. had made PF Changs General Tso’s Chicken and it smelled absolutely awful to me and kinda started my morning on the lightly queasy side. So, I guess I still have my first trimester distaste for chinese food.

Hormonal Shit: I cried and laughed at myself for crying at the same time. I held my little orange cat and sang “You Are My Sunshine” to her multiple times because I was overwhelmed by how sweet she is. I want to scream everytime said cat uses my boobs as a launch pad.

Other: To celebrate being 25% through this pregnancy and having made it to double-digit weeks, I had my first cup of coffee this morning!! It was good and slowly sipped an savored.

Oh yeah, and on my week of eating: I need 300 extra calories a day, which I guess explains how I ate an average of almost 2000 cals a day and lost a pound this week.

9 Week Bump and 8 week summary

image image

So, the screen shot is an overview of my eating in my 8th week… it can’t tell you much other than my calories unfortunately, but know that I do strive for balance and try to avoid gestational diabetes.

Total weight gain this pregnancy (as of 9w): 2-3 lbs. My labs came back from my mid 7 week appointment and I’m super healthy and not a carrier for thalassemia or cystic fibrosis which were the two genetic diseases I was tested for based on my French Canadian heritage and my caucasian-ness. The only lab which came back “abnormal”, as they said on my voice mail causing me to hold my breath for a few beats, was my vitamin D levels. Phew, okay that’s not scary or unexpected. I started gummy vitamin D supplements in addition to my pre-natal as directed.

Speaking of pre-natals I’m still taking an over the counter on ( that has 1000 mcg of folic acid) because the NP called mein a script but that vitamin was $40 after insurance which is just ridiculous to me. The pharmacist tried to make this seem not crazy by saying it’s $130 without insurance, which honestly, is just stupid to me. I had them put it back because I’m not spending $40 a month on vitamins when the first NP I saw mentioned that she has a prenatal she recommends that comes out to $3/month and has all that DHA and folic acid and what not. I tried reaching her this week but was on hold for a while so I decided I’d stop in later this week and of course it’s been well below freezing for days and I’m refusing to leave the house. I’ll go Monday.

What else… it’s still been impossible to find most food appealing. Food seems to become especially unpalatable if I bought it in advance from the grocery store to cook and eat later like a normal human being. I’m hoping this fades with the first trimester in a few weeks and I can finally eat the stockpiled trader joes in my freezer. Oh, so I haven’t gained any weight in the last week, but I swear I look thicker in the waist despite that. The baby is now the size of a grape and just today graduated from embryo to fetus!

This has been long enough, so this has been the 8 week update and 9 week bump, thanks for reading if you made it to the end. Sorry for the vitamin rant detour.

Hormones and the Husband.

C. came home for almost two weeks and quickly realized that the wife he came home to was not the wife he left. Basically, hormones have gently tweaked certain parts of my personality. Like the patient part and the part that was responsible for de-escalating any potential arguments between us. I didn’t realize how much my calmly talking through things when he gets impatient or snippy instead of snapping back keeps us from fighting until I lost the ability. We were like that crazy Italian couple in the gelato commercial who can’t stop shouting at each other. Not all the time, but a few times in the two weeks and for us, that’s a lot. So, that was different. Luckily, 95% of the time we just peacefully binge watched season four of Shameless (pre-ordered a month ago because we’re addicted!) and then he’d go to bed at 930 or 10 and I’d spend the next few hours laying around reading babycenter.

I’m apparently way less annoying from afar, but I do still manage to drive him crazy even with 5 states between us. Today it was a phone call about how nothing in the house sounded good but I couldnt go get take out because it was freezing cold outside and also if you leave our apartment after 4pm you’ll never find a parking space within 1/4 mile again, and I have the biggest, angriest hormonal zit of my whole entire life and im soooo hungry and I want a salad and sandwich  but pregnant women cant eat ANYTHING. So, yeah, I am a very annoying pregnant woman sometimes. I ended up finding the one sandwich from Jimmy Johns that I could eat, thanks to the cold cut ban and the mercury in tuna, and ordering delivery. For some reason, I basically wrote an ode to that sub-par looking BLT made with shredded iceberg lettuce. After all the whining, he got two long textx about how disappointing my sandwich looked versus how perfect it was and how it was the first thing to actually hit the spot in forever because I mostly just tolerate food this last month. Oh, the rollercoaster of emotions involved in dinner today was just special.

8 Week “Bump”

I’m not going to lie to you. What you are about to see is not a baby bump because although my uterus has already doubled in size, it had yet to rise enough to be responsible for any bumpiness. I wanted to start before I had a baby bump so I could monitor its progress, so here I am, at 8 weeks showing you my bloat bump.

I gained 5-6 pounds the day before I got my positive test, at just past 3 weeks, and I gained it overnight. Now, at 8 I’m 3-4 lbs above my pre-pregnancy weight because luckily some of the bloat deflated. Basically I gained 5 lbs and lost 2 of them so far this pregnancy. Probably when I switched from eating like this:

To eating like this:

I could still be better but I’m trying to eat a range of nutrients and subbed tangerines for bags of chips. Thinking about eating chips grosses me out since around the switch anyway, so it was pretty easy. Though I think I could do some salt and vinegar chips, though I won’t!

I’ll also do a weekly update (and have been in a document for myself) but of course that has to come further into the week. This has sort of been a half-hearted update. I promise to try to work on my pictures and organize my updates in the coming weeks 😉
